Behind the Flight
As the sun climbed above the distant dunes, the first light began to reveal details across the immense salt lake that had been hidden only moments before.
We circled the Bell JetRanger several thousand feet above the lake, slowly exploring the shoreline as the changing light transformed the landscape beneath us. Every circuit revealed new patterns, subtle changes in colour and textures that simply couldn't be appreciated from the ground.
Then one formation caught my eye. Looking straight down, I could clearly make out what appeared to be a human figure lying peacefully along the edge of the lake. To me it looked as though the landscape itself had come to rest, quietly waiting to be warmed by the first rays of morning sunlight.
It was entirely natural, shaped over countless seasons by water, salt and shifting sediments, yet it carried an unmistakable human quality. The white salt crust became a blanket, the blue water suggested open sky, and the warm desert tones completed the illusion of someone lying peacefully within the landscape.
Although the photograph is presented as a vertical aerial view, rotating it reveals an entirely different perspective. Suddenly the landscape no longer feels like an abstract pattern but becomes something deeply familiar, inviting each viewer to discover their own interpretation.
