Reflection
Tidal channels and coastal vegetation trace delicate lines across French Island. The landscape reads like a drawing made by water—quiet, intricate and continuously reshaped by the movement of the bay.

Behind the Flight
French Island was photographed during a helicopter maintenance flight along Victoria's coastline. Unlike a normal aerial photography mission, this flight required us to operate at much higher altitudes than usual, reaching around 7,500 feet. It offered a rare perspective of a landscape I'd flown over many times before.
From that height the coastline became wonderfully abstract. Familiar beaches, estuaries and tidal flats merged into intricate patterns of colour and texture that are impossible to appreciate from lower altitudes. The changing tides revealed sweeping ribbons of sand and shallow water, creating subtle variations in colour across the landscape.
Maintenance flights are rarely considered photographic opportunities, yet they often place you in unusual positions that would never occur during a dedicated assignment. With the helicopter already committed to the flight, I simply found myself observing the landscape from an entirely different perspective.
Looking down over French Island, the coastline became less about geography and more about composition. The meeting of land and sea dissolved into flowing shapes and colours, revealing a natural artwork that changes with every tide.
