Reflection

Some photographs demand your attention. Others quietly change the atmosphere of a room. Ocean and Earth is one of those images for me. Every time I walk past it, I'm reminded of the calmness of that coastline and the simple beauty found where land and sea meet.

Behind the Flight

Ocean and Earth was photographed during a coastal assignment along South Australia's spectacular Limestone Coast. We ferried the helicopter from Melbourne, following the Great Ocean Road to Lorne before continuing west to Robe, where we based ourselves for a weekend exploring one of Australia's most pristine stretches of coastline.

Flying this coastline is a remarkable experience. Long, untouched beaches stretch for kilometres, interrupted only by rocky headlands and impossibly clear turquoise water. From above, the meeting of ocean and land becomes wonderfully simple, revealing subtle colours and patterns that are often overlooked from the ground.

As we tracked along the shoreline, a handful of vehicles were camped on the beach below. Against the immense landscape they appeared almost insignificant, providing the perfect sense of scale. Their presence quietly reminded me just how vast and untouched this coastline really is.

There was no dramatic weather or technical challenge that day. Just beautiful light, calm conditions and a landscape that seemed completely at peace with itself. Sometimes the most memorable photographs aren't created through adversity or split second timing. They simply come from being in the right place and recognising a moment of quiet beauty.
