Reflection

From this altitude, Manhattan reveals itself as a single uninterrupted composition.

Framed by the Hudson and East Rivers, the island stretches toward Lower Manhattan like an architectural peninsula, each district building upon the next before culminating in one of the world's most recognisable skylines. At its centre, Central Park provides a quiet counterpoint, anchoring the city within a landscape that has shaped its identity for generations.

Captured in the final moments before sunset, the photograph transforms New York into a study of light, geometry and scale. It reveals not only the density of the city, but the extraordinary order that underpins it.

Behind the Flight

Capturing Manhattan from this perspective required positioning an open-door helicopter above the island during a narrow window of evening light.

Every element of the composition depended on precise coordination with air traffic control while working within some of the busiest controlled airspace in the world. As the sun descended, reflections across both rivers framed the island while the western skyline caught the final warmth of the day.

The resulting photograph reveals the remarkable scale of Manhattan in a way that is rarely experienced, even by those who know the city intimately.
