Summer Sun

Fitzroy Pool, Melbourne

Edition of 50

Reflection

From above, the swimming pool becomes more than a place to cool off. It becomes a gathering place, a geometric oasis and a small reminder that some of life's happiest moments are also its simplest.

Behind the Flight

Summer Sun was photographed during one of my regular aerial progress flights over Melbourne. Week after week I'd document construction projects from the Bell JetRanger, following much the same route across the city. Commercial assignments like these often become wonderfully familiar, leaving room to notice the unexpected along the way.

It was a perfect summer's day. The city was bustling with clear blue skies overhead and there was little doubt where everyone wanted to be. Melbourne's beaches and outdoor pools were filled with people escaping the heat, and as we approached Fitzroy Pool I asked the pilot to position the helicopter directly overhead.

Banking steeply into a vertical view, the pool became an almost abstract composition. The crisp rectangle of brilliant blue water contrasted beautifully with towels, recliners and sunbathers scattered around its edge. In the corner of the frame, the distinctive circular roofline quietly revealed the location without dominating the image.

Although I was in the air to photograph a construction site, this was the image that stayed with me. It perfectly captured the feeling of an Australian summer. A place where, for a few precious hours, time slows down and the only decision left is whether to swim or simply lie in the sun.
