Reflection

Endurance takes many forms. In the foreground it is found in human determination and the pursuit of sport. Beyond it lies a coastline whose strength has been measured not in years, but in millennia. Together they remind us that perseverance exists on scales both human and geological.

Behind the Flight

Endurance was photographed from a helicopter during a sunrise flight along Sydney's spectacular coastline. Morning sunlight illuminated the cliffs with warm sandstone almost glowing against the cool blues of the Pacific Ocean. A landscape shaped by countless years of wind, waves and weather.

Following the coastline from above, I noticed a rowing crew making their way across the open water beneath the towering cliffs. Their rhythmic movements immediately drew my attention. Every stroke demanded huge effort, teamwork and determination as they worked against the ocean, while above them the immense cliffs stood as silent witnesses to a much longer story.

Flying by at 120knots in the helicopter, I was struck by the contrast. The endurance of the athletes would be measured in kilometres, training sessions and years of dedication. The endurance of the landscape had been measured over millions of years, gradually shaped by erosion into the cliffs that define Sydney's coastline today.

The image became less about sport and more about scale and perspective. Human endurance and geological endurance, existing together in a single moment. One fleeting and dynamic, the other ancient and seemingly immovable, yet both connected by the same coastline.
