Reflection

From a distance the yachts appear to move as one, each responding to the same tide while remaining entirely independent. Sometimes life's strongest connections are the ones we never notice.

Behind the Flight

With the Flow was photographed from an EC120 helicopter while transiting to an assignment over Sydney. It was one of those rare autumn mornings that pilots hope for. Crisp air, almost no wind and visibility that seemed to stretch forever across the harbour.

As we crossed the water I noticed a group of moored yachts below. Although every boat was independently anchored, they all pointed in almost exactly the same direction, responding together to the subtle forces of wind and tide. From above they appeared less like individual vessels and more like a single fleet moving with quiet purpose.

I asked the pilot to circle the harbour until the angle of the sun removed the water's reflections. Without the glare, the harbour became a smooth body of water and the yachts seemed to float effortlessly through empty space. It transformed an everyday marina into something almost dreamlike.

What interested me most wasn't the boats themselves, but the invisible forces shaping them. Although motionless, they all responded to the same currents, tides and breeze. From above, it became a simple reminder that we are often connected by influences we cannot see.
